Ways to make £1,000 a month fast UK

You do not have to have special training to make extra money every month. For some areas you may need to invest a little in education to get yourself up to speed.

If you want to make money from home then it is totally possible to make an extra £1,000 a month without having to step outside your door.

This was the goal I set myself after losing my job back in 2018. I can report that I have since more than doubled that amount through working for myself.

It can be hard work some weeks to fit everything in, and I have to remind myself regularly that by working for myself the goal was to get more time with the kids. Sometimes that means I need to do a lot of my work in the evenings when the kids are asleep.

But making extra cash from home as worked great for me, and I want to give you some ideas for how you could make that vital £1,000 a month.

Remember one of the most important things to do when getting started with making extra money is to make sure you're taking advantage of deals available to you when shopping for essentials.

Use store loyalty cards to make sure you get money off that you're owed from collecting points and use a site like Top Cashback when purchasing items from participating brands.

Deliver Amazon parcels

You could become an Amazon delivery person through their Amazon Flex scheme.

There are a ton of benefits to signing up to working with Amazon Flex. You can do as much or as little by way of hours as you wish. Plus you don't need any qualifications.

You will need to have a car and you will need to set aside time to make your deliveries.

Amazon wants you to pass a background check before you are able to get started with deliveries. But once you've done this all you need to do is use the Amazon Flex app to to find available delivery "blocks" of time in your area.

When you see these blocks you will also see the expected earnings if you take the block.

Once you've booked a block, you head to your local Amazon location to pick up the parcels then head out on your deliveries. You will be paid by direct deposit by Amazon once per week.

Amazon is recruiting for delivery drivers right now in areas across the UK.

How much can you make with Amazon Flex?

Amazon Flex pays £13 to £15 an hour. This pay is based on how many deliveries you make across a block of time.

There is an hours cap of 24 hours from Monday to Sunday. This means the absolute maximum you could make per week doing this is £360. But if you work the maximum number of hours per month than you can make £1,440.

There is however the possibility that Amazon won't have enough blocks to offer you this maximum, although you may find that at busy times like Christmas it is a little easier.

Another downside is the wear and tear on your car, which you will need to consider when it comes to your earnings.

Dog/pet boarding and walking

If you love animals then setting up your own dog, cat or small pet sitting service or dog walking service could be ideal.

There are a few ways to go about doing this.

You could set yourself up as an independent animal sitter/walker in your area. You will want to get a website sorted out and try to get it ranking on Google so that when people in your area search for cat sitters or dog sitters in your town, you pop up on the first page of results.

If you set up your own business you could also try to advertise locally either in online listings, the local newspaper or in notice boards in community centres and shops.

As an independent pet sitter you could offer to board animals, which you would need to do with dogs, or sell a pop-in service where you visit the client's home once or twice a day to feed their pets.

If you don't fancy striking out on your own then you could look into the Tailster website. This is a community of pet walkers, boarders and sitters.

The site connects people offering to look after pets with clients who need someone to care for their animal.

Some people who use the site already have a pet sitting business set up and they use Tailster to help them find clients.

Others simply get started on the site as an individual. It may take some time, and depends on where you live, to start making good money on here.

How much can you earn on Tailster?

But if you live in a big city or town then chances are you will be able to find clients through Tailster.  Some people report making thousands of pounds a month through the site.

Of course how much you earn depends on how much time you have, whether you board animals (which will mean you earn more) or visit them at their home.

Teaching and tutoring

If you are a former or current school teacher or are highly skilled in something then you could offer teaching services.

Parents are always looking for tutors to help boost their kids' learning from home. This type of work for qualified teachers is particularly popular for children taking entrance exams to private schools, or leading up to major exams like GCSE and A-levels.

Its not just academic educational services you could offer. If you are a skilled dancer or athlete then you could look for teaching opportunities in your area.

There may be clubs already set up that need teachers for kids' ballet classes for example. You will need to have qualifications and experience but if you do this is a great way to use your skillset.

How much can you earn as a teacher or tutor?

Tutor services can rake in as much as £30 an hour or even more. It very much depends on where you live and the specific area you tutor.

Consultancy and coaching

Can you offer expert consultancy or coaching to clients?

There are a wide range of people making full or part-time cash from this type of work!

Many blogging experts offer one-on-one advice for how to build and grow a money-making blog for example.

There are also coaches who help people get started with their own business, building it up from scratch and detailing what needs to be done from logo creation to marketing.

Of course this is quite a niche area and depends on you having a good amount of knowledge so that you can claim expertise in an area.

If there's something you're interested in but don't yet have all the knowledge or qualifications needed to provide services to people then you may need to invest a little in your education. This is true of coaching services such as helping new mothers with breastfeeding or providing advice and practical guidance on children's sleep.

Become a copywriter

Not to be confused with freelance writer, which is listed further down in this list.

The key difference is that copywriters create content that sells a product or service, whereas freelance writers tend to create content that provides information or entertainment.

The upside is you don't need to have any official qualifications to be a copywriter.

Finding work in this area really comes down to being determined, pitching to potential clients and seeking out work online.

You can find copywriter jobs at online jobs sites such as Indeed.

Start a blog

Launching your own money-making blog is a brilliant way to make income in your own time.

You're your own boss, you set the hours and the possibilities for earning are pretty amazing.

I earn more than £2,000 per month from my parenting blog. This is through a combination of advertising, sponsored posts and affiliate sales.

It has taken a lot of time, effort and learning to get me to this point. I share my best tips for starting a blog – the stuff I wish I knew when I got started – under the blogging category on this site.

I recommend getting started with a very clear vision of your goals and a very specific idea of your niche. Writing about stuff that interests you isn't going to cut it if you're in it to make money.

You need to start a blog that offers something that your readers need. I thoroughly recommend you niche right down when launching your blog and get started with a narrow focus on who your audience is. This means you can grow your blog much quicker.

How much can you earn from blogging?

Top bloggers earn six-figure salaries. It will probably take around a year for you to start earning £1,000 per month, but you will need to use this year wisely.

Proofreading

You will need to have a great eye for grammar, spelling and sense to be a good proofreader.

But it's a great at-home job to do that's also very flexible. While you can set when you do the work, because you will be completing tasks for people there will be deadlines involved.

Many people offer their proofreading services on the odd jobs site Fiverr. While this may be a good place to start, you won't make a ton of cash here as you will need to set your rates super low to stand out on this website.

Most proofreaders have a particular niche that they work in. Prior expertise in fields such as science, maths and technology for example could be a big asset if you want to go into proofing medical and scientific content.

Other types of content you could proofread include legal documents, blogs, novels, essays, technical documents, court transcripts and more.

There are lots of tips on getting into proofreading from professional proofer Louise Harnby.

Become a virtual assistant

There are many online entrepreneurs who employ the help of a virtual assistant.

The roles of a VA are pretty varied and you get some VAs who specialise in a particular area. For example some VAs focus only on Pinterest, creating beautiful pins for their clients and scheduling them too.

Virtual Assistants help clients with work such as:

  • Blog content creation
  • Answering emails
  • Social media post creation and management of accounts

There's no specific path to becoming a VA. Some people almost fall into the occupation by accident when someone requests their help or they connect with someone online looking for a VA with their specific set of skills.

If you want to be a virtual assistant to bloggers you should join some blogging groups and try to connect with fellow bloggers. Reach out and offer your services.

There are lots of tips over on the Society of Virtual Assistants site.

Be a freelance writer

Becoming a successful freelance writer is not about having a degree in English or specific qualifications.

Its something you can get started with right now! Its a wonderful option if you want flexible work that is based at home, but of course any project you take on will have deadlines.

To get started you should try to first build a portfolio. You may want to start a blog where you can showcase your writing to prospective clients.

You can find freelance writing work through lots of different ways, and it pays to be creative with this. Half of the challenge of making money this way is pitching for and finding the work. To find freelance writing gigs try:

  • Reach out to brands that have their own blog or magazine. Pitch some ideas to them and show them you could write content for them.
  • Sign up to freelance writing websites. There are several websites where you can connect with people looking for writers. Upwork is a good one and Fiverr can also be good when you're starting out, but the fees paid via this platform can be very low.
  • Check out Elna Cain. She has tons of tips for freelance writers on getting started!

Design and sell printables

You can make printables to sell as online downloads from your own website or on marketplaces like Etsy for free.

It doesn't cost you anything but the time it takes to design the product!

I have designed two printable planner products for my parenting blog. These bring in a little extra income every month but I am planning to add them to Etsy to get them more widely seen – stay tuned to find out how that goes!

Products you can make and sell as printables include:

  • Wall art
  • Planners
  • Checklists
  • Labels for the house
  • Organisers
  • Invitations to occasions such as baby showers and weddings
  • Quizzes and game sheets to be used at parties
  • Decorations for parties including table numbers and banners

I use Canva to create my printables for free. It doesn't cost anything to use the basic version of Canva. You don't get access to premium graphics and features but the free version has worked fine for me to create lovely PDFs.

Successful sellers on Etsy bring in thousands of pounds a month with their printables. But it is a very crowded market.

You will need to do a lot of work upfront to get the store set up and then try to promote it elsewhere on platforms such as social media.

Selling digital products is a great way to go, because once your products are made and uploaded they're all done, no more work required on that front.

Other platforms you can use to make printables are:

  • PicMonkey – which does charge an annual fee for usage but has a ton of great design options.
  • Photoshop – an expensive option but featuring tons of options for designing printable posters and artwork.
  • Snappa
  • Crello

Find genuine data entry jobs in the UK

You don't need any experience to get started with this work from home side hustle. The hours are flexible and really down to you and how much work you want to take on.

You will need a computer and possibly be expected to complete some kind of test assessing your skills before you can get started with particular companies.

But once you get going you could make a nice bit of extra income!

You can find data entry jobs at remote working jobs sites such as Clickworker. This site has a range of different types of work you can do remotely and data entry is one of them.

Another option is Amazon MTurk which connects companies who need tasks such as data entry done with workers wanting to earn extra cash.

Create and sell your own ebook

Everyone has at least one book in them! Have you ever dreamed of writing your own novel? Or do you have a non-fiction book idea that might help others?

You don't have to have a book deal or agent in order to sell ebooks. Anyone can publish a book on Amazon. You can also sell your own ebook from your website, which is what I do.

There's a complete guide to adding your ebook to Amazon here.

One of your biggest challenges will be motivating yourself to get writing. Start with an idea, then write out how you will structure that idea. If you're writing a how-to book then think about the topics you need to cover to give the reader everything they need to know about this. That then gives you an idea of your different chapter titles.

Make your own products

Are you crafty? If so you could make some extra cash by making your own products to sell online! What you make is up to you but there is a market for basically everything, from jewellery to rustic furniture.

Websites like Etsy and eBay make this easy to get started with, but in order to make good money from this you need to stand out from the crowd.

Marketing your products on social media can be a great way to increase your success rate.

Matched betting

This one isn't a job as such and it may not be for everyone. But some people are clearing £1,000 per month and more with matched betting.

So what is matched betting? It involves taking advantage of the free bets that bookies offer. Say you're placing a bet on a football match, you would use free bets to gamble on each side winning. This way you make money no matter who wins.

You don't need to know anything about sports or be a seasoned gambler to get started. This is known as risk-free betting, because you will win regardless of the outcome. It's completely legal and tax-free.

People on Profit Accumulator report spending five hours a week on matched betting to make £300 a month. So it is definitely a time-consuming pursuit. But it can start making you cash right away if you put the time in.

Set up your own online shop

You don't have to make your own stuff to sell things online!

Buying items in bulk or finding rare items of clothing or objects to sell in your own online shop can be a great way to make extra cash.

Your online store could be on a big site such as eBay or Amazon, or you could set up your own if you're willing to put the work in to marketing your site.

Say you wanted to sell items on Amazon. You could buy products wholesale and sell them on the Amazon site for a profit. You will need to become an Amazon seller which costs £25 per month. You can sign up to their Fulfilment by Amazon scheme which means they do the shipping for you, or you can choose to do this yourself.

Become an online bookkeeper

If you have a head for numbers then you could become an online bookkeeper for small companies or individuals.

A bookkeeper is not like an accountant. Your role as a bookkeeper would involve keeping tabs on the day-to-day financial transactions of a company.

Your work may involved updating financial records, paying bills or checking records for accuracy.

You don't need to have a professional qualification, but there are courses out there such as with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers to help you learn what you need to do.

There's a great guide with tons of information on becoming a bookkeeper on Xero.

Final thoughts on earning extra cash in the UK

This wide selection of ideas for how to make money from home should give you some great ideas for earning an extra £1,000 per month.

The key to making extra cash each month is:

  • Be prepared to put the time in. Any money-making side hustle requires effort. Working from home is a luxury, but it still requires some work.
  • Don't give up. Working for yourself can be tough going, but keep at it. If you find one strategy is not working for you then change direction and find another one.
  • Believe you can. Set off with a mindset for success. Believe you can do this and you will!
